چکیده
In this brief overview of the stellar populations of galaxies in clusters I highlight some of the most recent results, including the downsizing of the k+a population and the star formation–local density relation. I conclude discussing some open questions regarding the interpretation of the observational results, and speculating on the current meaning of the words “primordial” and “environmental”.

The Evolution of Population Gradients in Galaxy Clusters: the Butcher-Oemler Effect and Cluster Infall
We present photometric and spectroscopic measurements of the galaxy populations in clusters from the CNOC1 sample of rich, X-ray luminous clusters at 0.18 < z < 0.55. A classical measure of the galaxy blue fraction for spectroscopically confirmed cluster members shows a significant Butcher-Oemler effect for the sample, but only when radii larger than 0.5r200 are considered. We perform a princip...

We present a detailed analysis of the spectroscopic catalog of galaxies in 10 distant clusters from Dressler et al. (1999, D99). We investigate the nature of the diierent spectral classes deened by D99 including star forming, post{starburst and passive galaxy populations, and reproduce their basic properties using our spectral synthesis model. We attempt to identify the evolutionary pathways be...
متن کاملHierarchical Clustering and the Butcher-Oemler Effect
We show that the rapid evolution in the fraction of blue, star-forming galaxies seen in clusters as a function of redshift (the Butcher-Oemler effect) can be explained very simply if structure formation in the universe proceeeds hierarchically. We show that a rich cluster observed at high redshift has had a significantly different evolutionary history to a cluster of the same richness observed ...
متن کاملv 2 2 S ep 2 00 3 At the Vigintennial of the Butcher – Oemler Effect
In their study of the evolution of galaxies within clusters, Butcher and Oemler discovered evidence for a strong evolution in star-formation rate with redshift. Later studies confirmed this conclusion and uncovered several aspects of the effect: photometric, spectroscopic, and morphological. This article reviews a broad sample of these works and discusses selection effects, biases, and driving ...
متن کاملStar Formation in Cluster-Cluster Mergers
Radio continuum emission at 1.4 GHz was used to identify active galaxies in a sample of 20 nearby Abell clusters. The radio emission indicates either an active galactic nucleus or current star formation, and optical spectroscopy was used to evaluate which of these dominates for each of the radio-selected galaxies. In an analysis which parallels the blue fractions of Butcher-Oemler studies, we c...
